Experts think B needs a hit single soon, but her latest album seems poised to top the charts again next week.

As a contender for 2011 Summer Diva, Beyoncé is certainly making great strides to rule the airwaves this summer. After B’s fourth solo LP, 4, debuted at #1 last week, it’s looking likely that she’ll top the charts on next week’s Billboard albums chart as well.
A rep for SoundScan hadn’t responded to MTV News’ request for an exact number of units expected to be sold by next week, but Billboard is reporting that a lack of high-powered new releases should secure a repeat top spot for Beyoncé’s latest.
The buzz around B and the album will probably only continue to grow, since she’s slated to debut a video for her next single, “Best Thing I Never Had,” very soon. But her album’s success comes as a bit of a surprise, seeing as “Run the World (Girls)” nor any other single has really resonated with fans or radio so far.
“Beyoncé, I love her, but none of her singles thus far off 4 seem poised to be doing huge numbers,” Perez Hilton told MTV News.
But we should not count B out in the singles department just yet, Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew said.
“You’ve got to remember that Beyoncé, being typical Beyoncé, her albums generally are anchored by really big hits; this album doesn’t have those hits yet,” Drew told MTV News. “It’s not to say that it won’t. There are some very strong songs on the album, but they have not been released yet. There are those songs on it, but they have not come out yet and they haven’t struck yet. Beyoncé is coming out at a time when radio is very crowded.”
Despite those obstacles, B is definitely marching to the beat of her own drummer. “She’s going in a different direction,” Drew said. “She’s taking control of her own career.”

‘Dark of the Moon’ becomes highest-grossing film of 2011.

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” fended off competition from both an R-rated comedy and a family-friendly film as the third entry in the giant robot franchise maintained the #1 position at the box office with an estimated $47 million during its second weekend in theaters.
“Transformers” passed “The Hangover II” to become the highest-grossing film of 2011 thus far with its 12-day domestic haul of $261 million and crossed the half-billion dollar mark worldwide.
“Horrible Bosses” wasn’t able to dethrone Michael Bay’s CGI heavy explosion-fest but it does bear the distinction of being the only film in the top five with mostly favorable reviews from critics. Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day star in the black comedy, which opened at #2 with $28.1 million.
“Bosses” outperformed any of the films released by its stars in 2010, but the debut of “Zookeeper” didn’t rank highly in the filmography of Kevin James. Originally intended for a summer 2010 release, “Zookeeper” opened with $21 million to land at #3 on the box-office scorecard. Produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison (and featuring a monkey voiced by Sandler), the animal-heavy rom-com opened better than “The Dilemma” but didn’t come close to “Paul Blart: Mall Cop.”
“Cars 2″ dropped to #4 with $15.2 million. The animated sequel is the least-attended movie in Pixar’s history and has a three-week total of $148.8 million. Cameron Diaz’s “Bad Teacher” was #5 with $9 million for a three-week total of $78.7 million, which is almost four times its estimated production budget.
This weekend’s new releases include a little movie about a wizard named Harry Potter.

“The Hunger Games” has an impressive cast of new talent, unknowns and renowned stars that puts any franchise movie to shame, but one of the most surprising casting decisions made by director Gary Ross was to choose rocker Lenny Kravitz to play stylist Cinna.
When MTV News caught up with Kravitz to chat about his forthcoming album, Black and White America (due out August 30), he said he’s finally read the first of Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” trilogy.
Cinna — whose name often gets misinterpreted as “Sinner” when Kravitz says it, he told us — is one of the most significant secondary characters throughout the “Hunger Games” trilogy. The brilliant costumes he creates for leading lady Katniss Everdeen before the games help give her the confidence that she needs to get through a televised battle-to-the-death with 23 other teens. And his very subtle form of rebellion against the oppressive Capitol is not without consequences.
Since he is still only partway through the second novel “Catching Fire,” Kravitz has heard only hints of what would happen to his character in a potential second movie.
“People have told me, but I’m on the second one now, so don’t tell me how …” Kravitz said, cutting off any spoilers.
“The Hunger Games” will be Kravitz’s second big-screen acting performance after 2009′s “Precious.” When asked how he is preparing for what may end up being quite a dramatic scene in the movie’s sequel, Kravitz simply replied, “I’ll do it as best as I can.”
When Kravitz was announced as Cinna, MTV’s Hollywood Crush blogcaught up with several “Hunger Games” experts to hear their thoughts on the casting decision. Most of them were behind it, but the main concern was whether the singer had the acting chops for the performance.
“I guess the real question people have is, you know, what acting experience does Lenny Kravitz have? I’m confident that he can pull it off and do a really fantastic job,” “Hunger Games” Fireside chat host Adam Spunberg said.
“He certainly looks the part, at least in my mind, how I pictured Cinna,” “Hunger Games” Examiner Sara Grundell said. “Lenny Kravitz totally fits that mental image I had. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

Perez Hilton tells MTV News a Summer Diva is ‘defined by one thing: she is known by just one name.’

Every summer, there’s one lady who rules the beach, one pop diva who manages to rise above the rest thanks to a catchy tune and unstoppable promo campaign. Since the summer basically starts on the Fourth of July and goes right through Labor Day weekend, it’s time to start looking at the most likely contenders for the Summer Diva crown.
With everyone from Lady Gaga and Beyoncé to Britney Spears and Katy Perry making a play to be the one-and-only queen of summer pop (and also angling to have the Song of the Summer), only one will have that certain something that stands out. So who is taking an early lead and why?
“Divas tend to rule the summer,” Ian Drew, senior music editor at Us Weekly, told MTV News. “They tend to have very fun shows, very bright shows, very poppy shows, stuff that everyone can get into across all levels.”
Perez Hilton had his own definition of a Summer Diva. “She is defined by one thing: she is known by just one name,” he told MTV News.
Well, that seems to be the case for most of the Summer Diva contenders, but Drew went for one very famous California Gurl as his pick: Katy Perry. “She sort of knows how to rule the summer,” he said. “By now, it’s a part of her whole architecture. It seems like every single summer, she comes up with the perfect summer jam, ever since 2008. Now she’s got ‘Last Friday Night.’
“The next is Britney,” Drew continued, not wanting to count the veteran out of the race. ” ‘I Wanna Go’ is a clear summer hit. They both have these dueling huge summer tours.”
Hilton noted that Perry is on “such a hot streak right now. It looks like Katy may be the queen of the summer.” But he’s throwing his weight behind a different diva.
“The real queen of the summer — the diva to beat all divas — is going to be Adele,” he gushed about the unstoppable singer. “What makes Adele the diva of the summer is that she’s doing the best without trying at all. You see Gaga, Beyoncé and Katy everywhere [and] you see Adele nowhere, and she’s still outselling them. Adele is connecting to audiences in a big way, and to me, that’s impactful, that’s relevant.”

50 talks to MTV News about G-Unit’s newest signee on set of Tony Yayo’s ‘Haters’ video.

When 50 Cent was infamously shot nine times in May 2000, his violent reality was just too much for his first label, Columbia Records, so they dropped him. This past June, G-Unit’s newest signee Kidd Kidd was shot six times in his native New Orleans, but instead of backing out of the deal, it drew 50 closer to the youngster.
“Them boys down in New Orleans, they’re active,” 50 told MTV News. “It’s a lot goin’ on down there, and because I experienced it, I didn’t move away from it. I actually ID’d with the situation a little more. He got hit six times, he got a bag on now,” 50 said as Kidd Kidd lifted his shirt to reveal a colostomy bag on the set of Tony Yayo’s “Haters” video.
“Columbia, when that situation took place with me, they walked away from me just because they’re not familiar with the actual environment and what happens at different points,” he continued. “It don’t make me no difference: I understand it.”
Kidd got his start as a part of Lil Wayne’s Young Money camp and even appeared as a guest on Tha Carter III single “Mrs. Officer.” Now that he is with G-Unit, the NOLA spitter has since collaborated with Fif on his own single “Better Walk” as well as the title track of 50′s upcoming album.
“It’s a blessing getting down with Fif. It’s real, it’s all love,” Kidd said. “There ain’t too many real people in the industry, period. I’ve been around a lot, and right now it’s time. I never felt like this before.”
